As the name indicates, GTO's can be turned off, in contrast to ”normal” thyristors. This makes them the preferred semiconductor for switching of high frequency and power.
Today most of these applications use IGBTs which are easier to control, but for very high power converters, gate turn-off thyristors are still the best choice.
